The Ysleta neighborhood was incorporated into the city of El Paso in the 1950s as the city's borders expanded, but still retains a character that sets it apart from the rest of the area. The name of the neighborhood comes from the "Isleta" Native Americans who lived in the area after the revolt of 1680. The Ysleta del Sur Pueblo Nation is also located near the Ysleta area. Recognized by the federal government, this Nation maintains its own governing body and is one of three nationally recognized tribes in Texas. Although it is completely independent, it still is within the borders of the city of El Paso.
